4 Stars to Unmaking Hunter Kennedy by Anne Eliot

Published January 11, 2013 by katheryn13

After a car accident–an event he considers a prank gone bad–pop star, Hunter Kennedy is forced to hide out with his aunt in small-town Colorado. He’s supposed to rest, heal his scars and attend high school in disguise until the press dies down. But he only wants to get back to work.

Worse, the girl who’s been assigned to make him over into a geek is a major geek herself. Vere Roth is a chattering pixie, a blushing tornado and a complete social disaster. He’s never met a girl who’s never-been-kissed, believes in romance and thinks Hunter’s a ‘nice’ guy.

Funny thing is…Hunter is nice around Vere because she’s his first real friend. He also can’t seem to stop sharing his secrets or keep her out of his heart. Knowing he’d never deserve a girl as sweet as Vere, he resigns himself to the friend zone, and helps his new bestie with her own makeover.

She tortures him daily for ridiculous guy advice on how to snag her life-long crush. A guy Hunter thinks is totally wrong for Vere, and sadly, one who has taken note of Vere’s transformation.

When Vere asks her best friend for some kissing advice, Hunter can’t resist…

And that’s when things get out of control…

High School Romance, first love, sweet romance

I will start off by saying this was a really sweet, sweet story. It was the story of a broken boy, a nerdy girl, and basically their way into each others arms. Gentle, soft, and the makings of true love :)
It’s from both points of view; Hunter and Vere :). Which was actually pretty nice. I got to understand what he was thinking, where he was coming from, but also Vere as well.

**One thing that bugged me about this book, and maybe it was my Kindle, I’m not sure, but it was like… structured weird. It wasn’t in paragraph form… I’m not sure how to describe it, but I literally got confused sometimes of where I was in the story because of it. But that’s just literally the structure, nothing else!! Didn’t ruin the story for me!**

On towards the review! This is about a broken boy, Hunter Kennedy. He did some terrible things and was basically sent to live with his Aunt to hide out; he’s a celebrity and his manager and his mom believe he needs a break from that lifestyle. They literally find a person to fill in for him as he hides out. It’s terrible. He is forced into it and he just literally hates it.

Though, he does meet Vere.

He instantly feels comfortable around her. He allows her to make him over so that no one will recognize him while he is hiding out. He enjoys making her laugh, he likes her company, and all the while, he hides his feelings as they go closer and closer each time they hang out. It’s really sweet. He becomes the Best Guy Friend. He basically is “Friend-Zoned” but he walks into that himself when he continues to remind her that he isn’t her type. But you can clearly tell… he’s never had a real girlfriend, or really had any real feelings for anyone, and he likes her. A LOT.

Vere is the NERD/DORK of the school. She really only has one friend, and her older brother Charlie; who is cool and popular and on the football team. Basically… Vere has never been kissed. She is so innocent and sweet, but no one sees that because of… well, something in her past. Basically, she went boy crazy over her brother’s best friend, something happened in front of the whole school (pretty much) and she’s been doomed ever since. But, Vere is rather funny, very enthusiastic, and I love her. She’s sweet! Great best friend material! Also girlfriend material too! :)

Then, the boy Vere went boy crazy over… starts liking Vere… It kinda kills Hunter because… well he wants her! All sorts of things go down.

Hunter gets punched by Charlie, Hunter fights back verbally, Vere learns ALL of Hunter’s secrets… I was like okay, can someone just let the love happen please?!

After all this stuff, Vere asks a favor of Hunter. It’s an odd request, and Hunter won’t help at first. Then he does. Causing emotions to just FLOW out. I mean just FLOW, he lays it ALL on the table. Not only does Vere feel confused, she lets him just walk away. It killed me!! I was like how can you let him just walk out like that? After what he did? And said? And what?! Ugh.

Vere needs a second opinion in the matter. She decides to continue on with what she was going to do, which is why she needed Hunter’s help, and it got worse. She sees the true side of this Curtis boy (Charlie’s best friend, etc.)

THEN A BIG THING HAPPENS. I NEARLY DIE. I WANTED TO CRY FOR HUNTER. Then I was mad at Charlie, then I wanted to cry some more…

After that big thing, happiness finally shoves its way into this book. Hunter does something so beautiful and real and I just went AWWWWWWWWWW the whole time. I smiled the entire time. It was sweet, romantic and I loved it. He finally gets to be happy :)

I would recommend this book. It’s a longer book, but it’s about true friendship, dark pasts, and true love. It’s a beautiful eye opening story. Def put this on your to-read list! It’s an innocent love story! :)
