4 stars to Shattered (Slated #3) by Teri Terry

Published April 30, 2014 by katheryn13

Kyla is in danger from both the government Lorders who erased her memory and the terrorists who tried to use her. So now she’s on the run. Sporting a new identity and desperate to fill in the blank spaces of her life pre-Slating, Kyla heads to a remote mountain town to try to reunite with the birth mother she was kidnapped from as a child. There she is hoping all the pieces of her life will come together and she can finally take charge of her own future. But even in the idyllic wilderness and the heart of her original family, Kyla realizes there is no escape from the oppressive Lorders. Someone close to her may be one of them, and even more frighteningly, her birth mother has been keeping secrets of her own.

In this stunning series finale, Kyla finally finds out who she really is, and the road to this discovery, and to deciding who she wants to become, is full of dangerous twists and turns that will keep readers riveted.

Review:

So this last instalment of the Slated trilogy was a tornado of feelings. First off, how many names does Kyla need? I got so lost. Anyway, I loved this book. Was sad to see the series end, but it tied off loose bits and we find out more about  who Kyla really is. Or rather, we try to.

Having set off with a new identity, Kyla travels to Cumbria to meet her birth mother, Stella. Who well, I’m sure you can guess, has some secrets of her own. Things are never as straight forward as one hopes, and Kyla soon realises that there are more details of her life to unravel, just when she thought things were calming down. Become somewhat normal in a world full or terrors.

Kyla and Aidan, a guy who I actually forgot existed (it’d been a while since Fractured), helps her find the answers. Although there are new people introduced along the way, you still get the same classics like Ben. Oh Ben, WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU?!

That’s all I can on the matter.

Kyla becomes heavily involved with MIA and helps Mac and Aidan to unleash the truth about the Lorders and the government in order to shut them down. Unfortunately Stella’s mother who happens to be JCO (don’t ask me what that stands for, I just remember reading it a lot. >_<) for the Lorders and ends up sabotaging most of MIA’s effort, until a final revelation is revealed. This ending completely mind bombed me (new phrase, you like?). Page after page I needed to find out what and how this story would be resolved but damn if it didn’t kick me in the gut occasionally.

A dystopia with a twist to the future, this series is by far in my top 3 of series to read.

4 stars to The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater

Published April 20, 2014 by katheryn13

Now that the ley lines around Cabeswater have been woken, nothing for Ronan, Gansey, Blue, and Adam will be the same. Ronan, for one, is falling more and more deeply into his dreams, and his dreams are intruding more and more into waking life. Meanwhile, some very sinister people are looking for some of the same pieces of the Cabeswater puzzle that Gansey is after…

THERE ARE SPOILERS REGARDING THE RAVEN BOYS!!

Review:

The Dream Thieves continues on from The Raven Boys. Gansey and his friends are still searching for Glendower and Cabeswater is still as mysterious as it ever was. Also, it’s missing. Whatever happened to Adam in book 1, has changed things drastically.

This book is more about Ronan and his past. It’s nice that the chapters are split between different characters, but I find it confusing sometimes, especially when the chapters have no titles. And with the POVs being fairly…omnipresent, it’s hard for me to really get focused. But never-the-less I enjoyed this, despite it taking me a while. Ronan is such a deep and unknowable character in that there is so much about him that isn’t on the surface. He hides so much of himself from his friends and even his family. We find out he’s able to pull things out of dreams and this causes chaos with the ley line.  We’re introduced to his younger brother, Matthew, who is completely different from the hard as nails approach that both Ronan and Declan have. He’s relaxed and fun, but perhaps more ignorant to what is going on around him.

There’s certainly more of Gansey, which I will always love. I just love him. He’s just…*sigh* And his closeness with Blue (Or Jane…lol) is heartwarming. Adam and Blue never seemed to be a ‘couple’ so much as two friends with mixed emotions and never really paying much attention to each other until randomly they are together and start questioning things. But they’re only 15/16/17 or whatever and they act like it’s the end of the world if they don’t have boyfriends/girlfriends. It baffles me.

Anyway, Blues’ family  centre more in this sequel and also a man named simply ‘the grey man’ who seems to take precedence within the story. He’s been sent to Henrietta to find the Greywaren, which he doesn’t know what form it comes in, so that makes his task difficult. It was a little confusing with all the different names for things but I got there in the end.

Mr Grey became a character I could have gotten used to and maybe even liked. Creepy but with a sense of morality despite his job.

The final chapters are like something out of a movie, epic and frightening.

I can’t wait to read the 3rd instalment and find out if they get any closer to finding their King.

A hidden secret has been buried in the past and not even Amanda can save herself from her own fate.

Excerpt 1:

It was all happening too fast for Amanda to conjure up any thoughts to try and attempt to fly before gravity let her go.

Panic crawled beneath every inch of her skin as the coaster started to quickly incline up the tracks. She knew that there would be no way that gravity would hold her in her seat throughout the entire loop. Once she would reach the middle, she’d be done for. The upcoming flip looked like the fiery ring of death and Amanda’s eyes grew wide with unbearable fear. The very thought of falling with nothing to hold onto terrified Amanda to the very core of her soul.

Excerpt 2:

The murky clouds hung low in the sky, threatening to down pour at any moment. The air was brisk for a spring day and a light breeze tossed around some strands of her layered, blonde hair. Amanda crossed her arms over her tee shirt, trying to retain some of her body heat as she made her way through the grass. The thought of looking into those eyes made her both nervous and anxious.

A shiver ran down the back of her spine, but she couldn’t determine if it was her nerves or the chill of the air. It urged her to get as close to him as she could, just to obtain that feverish temperature he exuded. She stopped and stood a couple feet away from him, not knowing what to expect next. She watched as he lifted his eyes to face hers.

“Were you followed?” Mitch broke the silence and looked toward the direction in which she came.

“No, I don’t think so, it’s just me.” Amanda said, looking at him awkwardly and unsure.
